Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Kevin and I spent the day at my Granny’s house. As usual, it was incredibly delicious and we ate way too much. We did not take part in Black Friday shopping, simply because I don’t have the patience, and I feel the Friday after Thanksgiving is much better spent eating leftovers in my pajama pants. But that’s just one girl’s opinion.
Whether or not you lined up for the big Black Friday sales, there’s no denying holiday shopping season is in full swing! In an effort to promote shopping local this December (and always), from now until Christmas my #FavoriteFriday blogs will feature one of my favorite Triangle retailers. This week’s #FavoriteFriday is a day late in support of shopping at local small businesses on #ShopSmall Saturday.
I’ll admit, this week’s featured retailer will probably be my favorite of them all – House of Swank! Y’all, John (pictured above), his wife Jessica, and their new addition, baby Hank, have taken Raleigh by storm with their cute and clever NC-themed apparel. Whether it’s a simple outline of the greatest state in the Nation, a Moonshine jar, a funny saying about your native NC town, or some other southern gem, House of Swank has a shirt for every North Carolinian on your list, and maybe even the out-of-towners too.
I own several of their shirts, and I feel like each time they post a new design idea on Facebook I show Kevin and say, “I’ve got to have this!” What can I say, growing up in Fuquay-Varina, phrases like “Bless Your Heart” and “I’m fixin’ to” speak to me. I think my best House of Swank purchase so far was a onesie that reads “Mama Tried” for the newborn of a friend who is a huge Merle Haggard fan.
It’s not only the product that makes House of Swank a fantastic local business – the people behind it are pretty awesome too. I met owner, John Pugh, a few years back when he inquired about setting up a booth at a fundraiser for the organization I worked for. I’d never heard of House of Swank but he generously offered the organization a percentage of his proceeds, so I figured it couldn’t hurt. Fast forward three years – if I was throwing the same event today I’d beg John to set up a booth because it seems like wherever House of Swank goes, the people follow.
For year-round shopping you can find House of Swank at local festivals and street fairs with a Swank Tank full of selection, or on their website. During December they’ve opened up the House of Swank headquarters for shoppers too. Visit them at 321 Hubert St in Raleigh. Check their blog for holiday hours, and follow them on Facebook and Twitter while you’re at it. They’re great about keeping customers informed of their whereabouts, hours, etc.
So what are you waiting for? Go get your swank on for #shopsmall Saturday! You can thank me later. : )
